As we aim to demonstrate to you each and every day, our first priority has and will continue to be the safety of our patients, your beloved family members. It is with this priority in mind that we, in good faith, do not actively support the use of internet, catalog and discount pharmacies for the distribution of veterinary pharmaceutical products to our clients. The reasoning for this decision is multifold.
The most important concern for these prescription medications is quality. Our products are shipped directly to us from the manufacturer. They are shipped overnight and stored in a climate-controlled environment. Veterinary manufacturers do not sell directly to human or online pharmacies. The product they sell is diverted product purchased by a veterinarian and could have been resold once or even multiple times. During this process, these medications are sometimes re-packaged or stored improperly, such as in a hot shed or the bed of a truck. There is no temperature control and there is no regulatory agency like the State Board of Veterinary Medicine to inspect how these products have been handled. This is especially true for flea and tick and heartworm preventatives.
Another concern for these products is the guarantee. Because we purchase our products directly from the manufacturer, our products are 100% guaranteed. This means if there is any product failure of your heartworm preventative, the manufacturer will pay for the entire treatment for your pet. You lose this guarantee with human and online pharmacies as they are a third party, and therefore, the manufacturer cannot stand by the safety and effectiveness of the product. There are many documented cases and unfortunately some we have experienced first-hand; we would hate to see this happen to any of our patients.
The efficacy of these prescription medications depends upon proper usage and dosage. Our veterinarians and/or their trained staff go over the product, how to properly administer the product, and when needed, even administer the initial dose so you can see how it is done. It is to your and your pet's disadvantage to have these resources unavailable when purchasing through online pharmacies. Additionally, human pharmacies, in most cases, have not training in the dosage and usage of animal medications. In fact, veterinary prescription shorthand is taught differently than human shorthand which has lead to potential fatal complications as has been seen in several high profile cases in the Richmond Metro area in the past few years.
Our policy as such at Montpelier Veterinary Hospital to provide written prescriptions if you choose to purchase prescriptions from another pharmacy. When you pick up these prescriptions, we require a signed waiver that informs you of the risks of filling your prescription through a human or online pharmacy.
First and foremost, we are here for our patients well-being, health, and safety. You can feel comforted knowing that we have years of veterinary experience with these medications that you cannot find with an online or human pharmacy, and that our medications are filled under the watchful eye of a licensed veterinarian or licensed veterinary technician. That is what caring for pets and people is about. As always, thank you for your business and please feel free to call with any questions or concerns.
